The Environmental Microbial Physiology and Ecology Lab

Weston Fredenberg
As a 2006 participant in UW Oshkosh's NSF REU Site, he joined us initially for only 9 weeks. A grant from WiscAMP continues to allow him to continue his research in our lab during this academic year. Weston has worked with Phil Anderson and Tom Siegrist (see below) to examine the utility of mass spectrometry-based microbial fingerprinting to bacterial source-tracking. Weston is now turning his expertise in mass spectrometry-based fingerprinting to methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In this work , he is collaborating with another former (2007) REU Site student participant, Kelsey White. Weston is pictured below presenting results of some of his work using mass spectrometry to fingerprint microorganisms.

Craig Worden
Craig is a graduate student pursuing his Master's Degree. Craig is interested in molecular mechanisms by which pH mediates metal toxicity. Specifically, Craig is using DNA microarrays to determine whether metal species other than Cd2+ elicit microbial responses that relieve (or perhaps exacerbate) metal toxicity. He recently presented some results of this work at the annual meeting of the North Central Branch of the American Society for Microbiology.

Saurabh Ranade
Saurabh just joined our lab as a graduate student pursuing his Master's Degree. Saurabh is beginning to work with Will Kovac to develop and refine our analysis of mass spectrometry-based microbial fingerprints

Will Kovac
Microarray experiments yield mountains of data that require close examination. Fortunately, computers aid in this process. Most fortunately for our lab, Will Kovac works with us to develop software tools to coerce computers to help with this data analysis. Will is also heavily involved in projects examining microbial responses to bismuth as well as the development of software algorithms to analyze mass spectrometry-based microbial fingerprints. Will will join our lab in a full-time capacity this summer through funding provided by a AAAS/Merck undergraduate research program at UW Oshkosh.

Kelsey White
Kelsey is a former (2007) participant in our NSF REU Site at UW Oshkosh. She currently attends Beloit College, but is making visits to work with Weston Fredenberg to develop optimzed methods to characterize MRSA isolates via mass spectrometry. Kelsey is pictured below working with our MALDI mass spectrometer to obtain microbial fingerprints.

Recent Graduates of the Sandrin Lab

Student Degree/ Year Notes

Rebecca Giebel

M.S./2008 Becky has graduated and published her work. Becky worked with Weston Fredenberg (above) to characterize isolates of Enterococcus using mass spectrometry. She is pictured (right) discussing her work with a state representative at the state capitol in Madison, WI. She is now employed by the Kimberly Clark Corporation.
Tom Siegrist M.S./2007 Tom has graduated and published his work using MALDI-TOF-MS to characterize isolates of E. coli. We believe he is now employed in the private sector.

Phillip Anderson

B.S./2007 Phil has graduated and is working with Covance Biopharmaceuticals as an analytical chemist. He co-authored a manuscript with Tom Siegrist recently.
Candace Otte B.S./2006 Candace just graduated (with honors!). She now works in the private sector in research for Covance Corporation. Candace's work in our lab focused on characterizing microbial responses to cadmium. She conducted rather extensive growth studies into mechanisms by which pH mediates cadmium toxicity to E. coli K-12.
Carissa Schubert REU Site 2005 Carissa will be entering medical school shortly

Chris Grandlic

M.S./2004

Chris is finishing his Ph.D. in Environmental Science at The University of Arizona and will soon be employed by Synthetic Genomics, Inc. (A J. Craig Venter company)

Doug Hoffman

M.S./2004 Doug is now a research microbiologist at Kimberly Clark Corporation. He is pictured (right) using a not-so-sophisticated instrument to perform some sediment sampling. . .in January. . .in Wisconsin.
Aso Qader B.S./2007 Aso is applying to medical school.
Eric Kracht B.S./2004 Eric is now employed in the private sector in microbiology and water quality.
Renee Pilon B.S./2004 Renee is currently considering employment options in the private and public sectors
