Responses To "The Jeffordsonian Era"

Hi,

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you !
I hadn't thought about it like that, but it sounds only too true.
Hope to see more work by you.

Sincerely,

Yes, you are absolutely right about what Daschle and other omit being what is needed. It's a marvelous list. What I have always advocated. However, many people in this benighted country have been so duped and stultified in turn by being told incessantly how marvelous it is here, by making lies of comparison or just lies about other countries and by simultaneously being denied what they should get - and that's what you so neatly summed up - that I despair of any change in that direction and end up helping democrats as those who will just not drag us to hell in a handbasket quite so quickly.

No, they, the Democrats, will not build such a platform, nor come close, and at least one party in a true democracy would. What are we to do, Mr. Palmeri, I truly beseech you? I simply feel it is no good criticising Democrats, unless for abandoning principal, for dealing us like-minded policies of the Rupublicans, when the latter are the chief architects of our evils. People, I feel, should focus on them first and a victory there would go far. Curse them and the U.S. for the big stinking, evil, ugly thing it is and for which they are responsible, along with their toadying apologists in the media

Sincerely,

Laura Terry

Thanks for your article. It's good to be reminded of the Progressive tradition. Otherwise, all I would have heard today was news about the Norquist/Figueroa scandal. These days we get no bread, just circuses. At least Milwaukee has to acknowledge the fact that it has an Hispanic citizenry that won't be pushed around any more.

Your list of what Daschle won't do is so true, so to the point, and yet so sad. I'm 55, have fought in the streets, at city council meetings, etc with some success, but hey, the majority don't want to rock the economic boat of short-term thinking.

I belong to an on-line poetry discussion group and for the last ten days we've been fighting about whether poetry ought to be political. The only good thing I've seen so far from the Jeffords move is that the cultural conservatives in the group have backed off.

Keep writing,

James Rutke
