Warbirds the Sound of Freedom

August 21, 2002

To Commentary:

I'm continuing to read with slight interest about the whining regarding the EAA attendance numbers, and a few other various things that really aren't worth mentioning. But when I read Mr. Seaver's complaining about the Warbird "noise," I HAD to respond.

Unfortunately, in Mr. Seaver's ill fated attempt at bastardizing the EAA, he chose to highlight one of things that is very near and dear to me, and I'm sure many others, the Warbirds.

Mr. Seaver, the "noise" you refer to from these Warbirds is actually the SOUND OF FREEDOM!! You know, freedom, the thing that gives you the right to speak on the issues you do, even as ridiculous as they are. Men died in these Warbirds to give you your freedom. Perhaps the people that have respect for these Warbirds and the people that flew them don't hear the "noise" like you do.

I for one am glad the EAA has these pieces of history and freedom come to Oshkosh every year. It gives people a first hand knowledge of what men and women went through years ago to keep the freedom we enjoy. Hopefully these planes can teach our children of today that freedom comes at a very high price!

Every time I hear one of these Warbirds, I hear freedom. Every time I hear Harmon Seaver, I hear "noise."

Hats off to the EAA for another great AirVenture, and "KEEP 'EM FLYING."

Sincerely yours,

Paul Esslinger
