Maehlville meets Hintzville at Rally

On April 28, 2002 Opera House Square in Oshkosh was the site of the 13th annual Workers Memorial Day Rally. County Board of Supervisors Chair Joe Maehl (left) addressed the crowd, as did Oshkosh Mayor Stephen Hintz (right). Mr. Maehl, a staunch defender of County Board characteristics and practices such as its 38 member composition and per-diem payment method, once said that if suggested Board reforms from a 1990 task force had been put in place, County goverment would have become "Hintzville." The reference was to the fact that not only did Mr. Hintz sit on the task force, but he is Winnebago County's most well-known advocate of "professional" government. At the Workers Memorial Rally, Maehl and Hintz stood side by side much of the day and appeared to be engaged in friendly conversation. Commentary hopes they were talking about ways to revive downtown Oshkosh, especially the building (see the backdrop in the pictures) that has been vacant for many years. Perhaps they were discussing the Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) schemes--a favored method of development among the "professional" government crowd--that often reward the owners of such eyesores.
