Square D's Community Interest

June 15, 2002

Hello Tony,

I read (once again) with interest your comments on the former Oshkosh company, Square D. Back in 1996, when the widening of Jackson Street was seriously being questioned, the Chamber of Commerce enlisted local businesses to write letters of support for the project to the Wisconsin DOT. Their letter writing campaign was much like their recent efforts to drum up support for the opposition of an ethanol plant in Algoma. It seems the Chamber's definition of "progress" is somewhat selective. But that's another story.

Among the transcripts, emails, and meeting notes gleaned from the DOT's file on Jackson Street, is found Square D's letter of support for a much needed improvement to our community. In the letter, the following hollow paragraph:

"The Jackson St. reconstruction project would improve the overall route to and from our facility. This would provide our employees with greater and easier access, which in turns provides Square D with more resources not only for our business and employees but for our customers as well. Even though during the construction phase there will be many delays and issues, in the long term, the city and our business will be positively affected."

I can only hope Square D's interest in its employees and their community is just as strong in Tijuana.

Best Regards,

Joel Kluessendorf
