John Frings: Leaders Aware of Comatose State of American Mind

Dear Commentary:
I checked out the commentary by Molly
Ivins of 11-24 regarding the direction America seems to be moving.
What troubles me most is not merely that the country seems to be moving away from the constitution, but just as troubling is the fact that a minority of people seem to be very concerned about it.

I do not mean to single out the younger generation but I am reminded of a comment
made by Ralph Nader as he refers to the present young generation as one which
has been "raised corporate". This may seem at first to be an unfair
observation. I suppose the difference of being "raised corporate"
is a matter of degrees. As my generation had a degree of exposure to the corporate
indoctrination of mass media but not nearly to the extent or effectiveness today
.
Homeland Insecurity as you like to describe it is being used to further the
agenda of those within our society that have little or any regard for the principles
on which this country was founded. Of course some of their apologists will make
statements that seem to disallow the collective assumption of liberty and will
often site one authority or another to support their view. For those familiar
with Jeremy Bentham, a political theorist of the late 19th century, it reminds
me of his arguments against democracy of that era.
This is something all of us should have seen coming a long time ago. Those
in positions of authority have been nibbling around the edges of freedom for
a very long time. Taking small bites out of the constituion and our liberties
and testing the water to see what they can get away with.
As one who follows the media relatively closely there have been subtle hints
for years and as the days pass if one looks back say 20 years the evidence is
becoming overwhelming that our democracy, if not fatally wounded and terminal
yet, it will be soon enough.
Those who are proponents of this "New World Order" have been very
effective in their efforts to push the country in this direction. The latest
comments from our drug csar under "W" are how many drugged drivers
are on our highways and the terrible consequences of all these drivers are.
With the requisite evidence to prove their case, of course. It would be interesting
to speak with some of those giving their testimony and see just how the truth
was bent to support the csar's case.
Frankly on closer scrutiny I would bet that the truth was optional. So of course
we need to give the police yet more power to stop people arbitrarily and force
them to submit to some test to prove their innocence. We have all been reminded
ad nauseum what "heroes our police are and we should all give them unquestioning
support even including violating basic rights. This is yet another example of
the mindset of this country which demonstrates time and again how "asleep"
the average schmuck is. Of course our current leadership is well aware of the
comatose state of the American mind. Preferring not to trouble themselves with
the sticky issues of privacy, individual liberty, and freedom in general. Just
as long as they can pursue their idyllic lives of a home in the burbs with a
couple of nice vehicles to park in the driveway, they will agree to anything.
Ah yes, being raised
corporate has it's ramifications does'nt it?
Until the chickens come home to roost and this demographic of America is threatened
directly with discomfort and incnovenience or anything that will shake them
out of the illusion that they live in a free country nothing will stop this
onslaught of our freedoms.
For myself I am seriously considering immigrating to another country if there
are any where a person has the right to be left alone, make their own choices
and not be constantly threatend with some dire consequence if they happen to
disagree. That is not my idea of freedom and I seriously doubt if ever was for
all the preceding generations that came before me.
Of course there are the usual suspects who will poopoo all of this but then, I did mention the comatose state of the country didn't I?
