Commentary Update for November 2, 2001: Jungwirth/Rylance, School Referendum, Chuck And Scott Must Go, Love/Hate Relationship With US

Dear Commentary Viewers:

Today (November 2) Mr. Mather and I will tape an interview with former Oshkosh Councilman Bob Jungwirth and local pundit Dan Rylance. The major topics under discussion will be budget and tax issues as related to local government. Mr. Rylance has done quite a bit of preparation for this interview, including hours in the library analyzing the city's budget and also interview the city's finance director.

Tuesday, November 6 is the school board referendum. On the Commentary web site you can find an archive of referendum materials here:

I never could find a good time to visit the affected school locations with school board member Teresa Thiel, but the FOCUS web site does include lots of pictures that demonstrate the problems in need of repair. That web site is here: http://www.ourfocus.net/

On another topic, I realize the nobody in the Wisconsin legislature cares what I think (although unless you are a well-connected lobbyist they don't care what you think either), but I recently wrote an essay calling for Senate leader Chuck Chvala and Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen to resign from their leadership positions:

Subsequently I received an e-mail from Don Fish, a former senior staffer for the Wisconsin Democratic Party. He agreed with my essay and sent me a link to a complaint he filed in August with the State Ethics Board:

Finally, I was honored to have the opportunity to participate in a campus panel earlier this week on the "Love Hate Relationship with the United States". All credit for organizing the panel goes to Greta Lax, a superstar graduate student in Psychology whose energy, concern, and curiosity has led to several great events on campus. Here's a slightly revised version of a handout I distributed at the panel:

Have a great weekend everyone!
