UW Oshkosh Student Dan Bush: The Northwestern's Pure Paternalism
November 11, 2002
Dear Commentary,
I, too, had the pleasure of reading the Northwestern's stupefying guest editorial last Friday. I was truly surprised that the paper would print something so vitriolic and devoid of logic. How seriously is one supposed to take a piece that starts off saying that suffrage for anyone 18 or older is the worst thing Richard Nixon ever did?
| As a student leader, I'm angry--not so much at the piece itself, but at the attitude it shows, both of the author and on behalf of the paper. It is pure paternalism. We very much have a stake in what goes on in Oshkosh, and to suggest that we ought to be deprived of a say is just plain wrong. |
That this attitude still has some pull in this town helps explain why, for example, the city is so nervous about involving the University in reviving downtown, or why the buses don't run after six.
The fact is that we are an important part of Oshkosh, and do a lot to generate business and jobs. Someone's got to spend money those 51 weeks a year EAA isn't in town. I doubt the manager at Cub Foods holds us in such contempt, or the local Papa John's franchisee, or Eastbay.
(As an aside, I wonder if Mr. Bradley would argue in favor of the federal government telling the states how they ought to interpret the Second Amendment? Somehow I doubt it.)

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
