European Odyssey

2008

Program Description

Program Introduction

Overview:

The 2008 European Odyssey study abroad program will provide 20 students the opportunity to spend an entire semester residing in Europe while progressing through five areas of academic study. Each class, taught by UW Oshkosh professors, will be a balanced blend of classroom and on site lectures, discussions, site visitations, written assignments and exams. On occasional free days or weekends, students will have opportunities to explore their environments on their own. The spring 2008 mini-residencies in Rome, Florence, Paris, London, Vienna, Amsterdam and Berlin, from 1to 3weeks each, will allow students time to "settle in" and savor the sights and sounds of their various settings. Numerous day trips to selected locations and sites will augment and enhance the program's academic emphasis.

The Program Course Schedule (tentative):

Our 2008 European Odyssey academic schedule will consist of five courses, taught one at a time in short term formats (from 2 to 3 weeks each). Students will earn a total of 15-16 academic credits during their participation in the European Odyssey program.

Program Narrative:

Students participating in the spring 2008 European Odyssey program will begin their journey of learning and discovery in early March by travelling to Rome, where they will begin "Encountering the Arts" taught by UW Oshkosh Professor John Minniear. After one week in Rome, the remaining 2 weeks of this course will be taught in Florence and Paris.

Professor Simon Sibleman will join the Odyssey program in Paris for a two-week, intensive, interdisciplinary course entitled "The Betrayal of the Western Liberal Tradition in France During the Second World War."

Our odyssey continues to London for one week where students will begin their third course, Culture and Values: an Introduction to the Humanities, with Professor Minniear.

A welcome "Spring Break" will follow and students will have the option of travelling on their own or moving to the program designated location of Edinburgh, Scotland where Professor Minniear will be in residence to assist students who want to explore Scotland. Accommodations and transportation to Edinburgh will be provided for students not wishing to travel on their own. After the "break," students will conclude their Culture and Values course during a 2 week residency in Vienna, Austria .

After leaving Eastern Europe, the Odyssey will travel north to The Netherlands where they will join Professor Heike Alberts for their 2 week study in European Geography. For one week, the unique city of Amsterdam will offer an extreme contrast to the previously visited European cities.

The final 3weeks of the 2007 European Odyssey will be in Berlin, Germany, where students will be conclude their European Geography course. During the final 2 weeks in Berlin, UW Oshkosh Professor Monika Hohbein-Deegen will join the Odyssey Program for the final course, "Modern Germany: From Division to Unification."

On June 7th, after 13 weeks of study, travel and adventure in Europe, we will bid "Auf Wiedersehen" to Berlin and return to Oshkosh (via Chicago)...leaving the rest of our lives to savor the splendor, excitement and growth of our 2008 European Odyssey.
