Rome

On Saturday, April 16th, we all made our way to the Bologna train station where we boarded our Eurostar train and headed to Rome. For many, it was a thrill to arrive in bustling Rome on the day before Easter. A few even made their way to the Basilica of St. Peter's to attend a late evening Mass, which was over in the wee hours of Easter morning. After adjusting to being in divided student accommodations, we all gathered on Monday at the YWCA for our morning class and prepared for our first week in Rome and our next to the last week in our 2006 European Odyssey. The week was a busy one during which, in addition to classes, we took in a visit to the Coliseum, Roman Forum, the Vatican museums and a day trip to the ruins of Pompeii. Here are a sample of the many visual delights that Rome has provided.

Pompeii

Our coach ride to Pompeii took us south along the mountainous backbone of Italy, past historic Monte Cassino, bustling Napoli and smoking Vesuvius to the ancient ruins. It was a unique experience, to say the least, to wander through the streets and remaining houses of Pompeii and note how remarkably similar life in 79 AD was when comparing it to our present day... as some of these pictures will reveal.
