Chemistry 105:  General Chemistry I         Spring 2010                   Dr. Mihalick

Exam 3 April 22, 2010

Reference information given on exam:

reference equations

Data such as enthalpies of formation or bond energies will be supplied as needed.

Answers for extra review problems

10.78  One is H2C=C=CH2; central carbon is linear, outer carbons are trigonal planar.
The other is cyclopropene, which is very strained!  The bond angles have to be close to 60°.

11.39
a. trigonal pyramidal, sp3, 109° (maybe less with lone pair)
b.  see-saw, sp3d, 120° and 90° (maybe less)
c.  tetrahedral, sp3, 109°
d.  square pyramidal, sp3d2, 90°
e.  tetrahedral, sp3, 109°
f.  octahedral, sp3d2, 90°
g.  see-saw, sp3d, 120° and 90° (maybe less)
