I teach introductory and upper-level courses in
the news/editorial
sequence, including news
writing, editing,
reporting,
advanced
reporting, and magazine editing and production.
As I say in my syllabus, I try to conduct class
in a manner simulating the style and atmosphere of a working
newsroom. That means we are pretty informal and somewhat subversive.
We laugh a good deal, but we also work pretty hard and cover a lot
of ground.
In 2001 one of my teaching methods was included
in the Great Ideas for Teachers program that is sponsored by the
Association for Education in Journalism
and Mass Communication.
Another one of my ideas was included in 2002. You
can read about the program here.
