Research: Carbonate sequence stratigraphy and quantitative stratigraphy. Hydrocarbon exploration and production: Texas, Northwest China, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia.

Exploration Geologist: Summer 1990, for Shell Offshore Inc., Regional seismic interpretation and well log correlation of Gulf of Mexico deltaic and turbidite systems.

Research Interests:

My main research focus is on describing stratigraphic patterns in marine carbonate platforms and evaluating the various mechanisms that effect platform evolution such as tectonics, sea level changes, environmental influences, and organic evolution.

One of my ongoing projects is a study the factors that control the evolution of several Triassic carbonate platforms in the Nanpanjiang Basin, south China. Field mapping, detailed stratigraphic study, conodont biostratigraphy, paleomagnetic reversal stratigraphy, and subsidence analysis techniques are being employed in this project.  UW Oshkosh undergraduate students are involved in the field and laboratory in the project. Sharon Felix completed a summer field season and laboratory work for a biostratigraphic and facies study of a conformable Permian-Triassic boundary.  Pete Dillet and Sharon Felix completed a independent studies on the Permian-Triassic boundary.  Jon Koenig has conducted a study of major tectonic and paleogeographic features from satellite images of the Nanpanjiang Basin. Pete Dillet also completed subsidence analysis for the basin and with Jon Koenig completed an integrated project on the paleogeographic and tectonic evolution of the basin. Dominic Druke completed a summer field season in south China. Dominic along  with  Kelley Steffen have completed a facies and biostratigraphic study of the termination of the Pingguo platform in Guangxi province. Last summer Ben Kessel completed field work in south China for a study of the termination of another the Heshan platform in Guangxi Province. Ben Kessel and Dayna Gross have completed  their study on the Heshan platform. Shannon Christensen has completed a study of Tubiphytes reefs from several platforms in the basin.

Another  project focuses on studying the environments and mechanisms that controlled the end-Permian mass extinction and post extinction biotic recovery. Permian and Triassic marine strata are being studied in south China, Japan and Turkey. Laboratory work includes biostratigraphy, petrography, and geochemistry. The project is funded by the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research fund and is being done in collaboration with Jon Payne (Stanford) and with undergraduate students at UW Oshkosh.  Margaret Seibel, David Follett have completed field work with me for this project in Turkey and Japan and Ryan Dhillon is currently conducting lab work.
