Research Interests:

I have been interested in the pre-Cretaceous geology of northeastern Mexico since the mid 1970s.  Much of my work there has been in conjunction with James McKee (UW Oshkosh) and Tom Anderson (University of Pittsburgh).  Initial studies focused on the igneous basement, now known to be Triassic, and immediately overlying rocks exposed in the Potrero de La Mula in Coahuila.  These rocks formed an island during the Early Cretaceous known as La Mula island.  Subsequent work proved the existence of the San Marcos fault, now known to have been active several times from Late Jurassic to Eocene.  It forms the northern border of another Cretaceous island (Coahuila island) and may be a splay of the Mojave-Sonora megashear of Anderson and Silver.  Following that work we progressed farther south to study the late Paleozoic Las Delicias arc and Las Delicias basin of Coahuila, then the Jurassic arc and associated rocks exposed sporadically in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, and Tamaulipas.  I also have collaborated with Ken Cameron and Bobby Lopez of UC Santa Cruz, who are looking at the isotope geochemistry of the Las Delicias arc and of Precambrian boulders contained in sediments of the Las Delicias basin.

Dr. Jones and ATV While working in the Las Delicias area of Coahuila, Mexico, our field transportation was one of these three-wheelers.  Very tricky, especially in an arroy, going downhill.  After the first time I turned over into a thorn-filled bush (and essentially all Chihuahuan-desert plants have thorns), Jim McKee and I decided to dress appropriately for our excursions into the unknown.

Grants:

I have had many grants through the years from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Faculty Development Program.  These funded research and teaching activities.  I have also had the following externally funded grants:

NSF-ILI, 1994,  "X-ray Diffraction in Geology and Chemistry," 1994, with Charles Gibson, Chemistry.  A $21,303 match plus $70,000 from an anonymous donor enabled the purchase of a state-of- the-art Rigaku X-ray diffractometer system.

Petroleum Research Fund, the American Chemical Society, 1991, $10,500.  "A Jurassic volcanic arc in north-central and eastern Mexico: Field documentation," (with J. W. McKee).

NSF, 1987, $85,000.  "A Field Study in Northeastern Mexico of the Southern Edge of North America during the Late Paleozoic" (with J. W. McKee and T. H. Anderson).

NSF, 1985, $8,340.  A supplement to "Stratigraphy, Petrology and Structure of Permian and Triassic Rocks of Southern Coahuila, Mexico" (with J. W. McKee and T. H. Anderson).

NSF, 1983, $90,900.  "Stratigraphy, Petrology and Structure of Permian and Triassic Rocks of Southern Coahuila, Mexico"  (with James McKee and Thomas H. Anderson (University of Pittsburgh).

NSF, 1981, $23,471.  "Research Microscope,"  to purchase research microscope.

NSF, 1979, $59,972.  "Pre-Comanchean Tectonics of Northeastern Mexico" (with J. W. McKee and Leon Long).
