2005 Spring Banquet

We had another great year of student achievements in the Economics Department -- we tried to recognize as many as possible at our Annual Banquet on Friday, April 22 at Lara's Tortilla Flats.

A special thank you to Prof. Gunderson for doing a great job with the ESA this past spring!!

Our Outstanding Reserach Paper of the Year Award went to Cliff Moll for his study, "The Disappearing January Effect and the Tax Loss Selling Hypothesis."  Cliff began this project as a Student-Faculty Collaborative Reserach Grant with Professors McGee and Huffman.  Cliff presented his work at the Midwest Finance Association Conference in Milwaukee in March.  Cliff also presented his research paper at the UWO Celebration of Scholarship Day and the UW Symposium for Undergraduate Research, both in April.   Cliff was awarded the Deans’ Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award at the UWO Celebration of Scholarship, complete with monetary prize, for his work.

Our top honor, Outstanding Graduating Senior went to Cliff Moll, as well.  In addition to his research work, and an outstanding GPA, Cliff has been an integral part of the Economics Department for 4 years.  Cliff served as a tutor and as a 3-time finance and budget officer for the ESA.  Next fall, Cliff will start pursuing a PhD in Finance at Florida State University (his first choice!), supported by a full fellowship.  Way to go, Cliff!

Our Rookie of the Year Award, or Best New Major, went to Ruth Eberhardt, who has been an economics tutor and grader this past year.  She also has an outstanding GPA and is planning on pursuing degrees in Economics, Finance, and Accounting.

Other Notable Achievements...

Five economics majors presented their original reserach at the UWO Celebration of Scholarship and the UW Symposium for Undergraduate Reserach in April.  They were Jeff Albright (institutional organization and economic growth in South America), Sofia Castillo (the impact of dollarization in Latin America), Cliff Moll (stock returns), Chelsea Nelson (the impact of parental education on children's educational attainment), and Laurie Turtenwald (forestry management in Wisconsin).

John Danula received a Student-Faculty Collaborative Reserach Grant for the 2005 - 2006 academic year to study the economic impact of regional smoking bans in Wisconsin with Profs. Johnson & VanScyoc using some nifty econometric tools.

Mark Hamilton and Laurie Turtenwald were both accepted into the MA/PhD program in economics at UW Milwaukee, where they will join UWO grad Chad CottiFarshid Haque will be attending the MA program at UC-Davis next fall.  Jeff Albright was accepted into and will attend the PhD program at Oregon State.  Romaine Couliby was accepted into the PhD program at Indiana University, where he will start in Fall 2005.   Nick Hannford (2004 grad) was accepted into the PhD program at Suffolk University in Boston, and Csaba Palicsko (2004 grad) was accepted into the MA program at Brugge, Belgium to specialize in European Studies.

We inducted two new members into Omicron Delta Epsilon, the National Economics Honor Society.  They were Justin Garrett and Kaspars Vavere.

Next year's ESA president will be Anna Kovalenko.  Officers include Sofia Castillo, Brad Wanta, Beau Buchmann, and Josh Goldbeck.  I am sure next year will be a great one!

Just a few days earlier, we had our field trip to Chicago -- visiting the Federal Reserve Bank and the Chicago Board of Trade, before our Cubs game was rained out!!  But, it's all about the learning experience, right?

Ever want to destroy US dollars?  You can do it legally with this cool machine.  That's how the Fed removes old, ratty bills from circulation.

Farshid and Mary destroy money.

Wow, that must be an interesting display!

Many thanks to Sofia Castillo, ESA Marketing VP, for providing the great pictures of the field trip, and to Professor VanScyoc for organizing the whole thing!!
