Guidelines for Effective Quoting
(from New Century Handbook, 207)


1) Using direct quotes sparingly and judiciously


2) Avoid long quotes, unless absolutely necessary


3) Be extremely careful to be accurate when copying a quote


4) Attribute quotes to their sources and punctuate them correctly


5) Integrate quotes smoothly into the stylistic flow of the paper


6) Incorporate quotes in a way that is grammatically correct


7) Provide an explanation to place the quote in context


8) Use the author's name or the work's title to introduce the quote


9) Use ellipses when words or phrases are omitted from the quote


10) Never quote a source out of context
