In addition to study questions and informal writing and research assignments,
I shall assign several formal writing assignments designed to get you to think
through the course material in writing and develop your critical reading, writing,
and research skills. These assignments should significantly facilitate our
class discussions, and many may represent the initial stages of your Maus essay, Group Project, and Final Project
(Therefore, I suggest you save them for future use).
The points for these assignments (10 points for shorter ones, 20 for longer
ones) will be tallied at the end to determine your overall Formal Assignment grade
(20%). See the grading scale on the Course Info page. Assignments must
be completed using MLA manuscript format and are due in person in hard copy
at the beginning of class. See the Course Info page for late penalties. Missed in-class essays will be made up outside of class, with an automatic 1.5 deduction.
Please note that Mid-Term Essay and Final Project peer editing as well as the Final
Essay Prospectus will
be included in your Formal Assignment grade.
The specific guidelines for the three out-of-class formal written assignments
are available via the links below.
In-class essay guidelines will be discussed in class.
