Something to remember, (especially for teachers):

Students with autism:

Are honest, innocent and lack pretence in social situations.

Not adept at deceiving, nor do they try to impress others.

Can be compliant when expectations are clearly understood.

Perfectionists at heart who are highly motivated to complete familiar routines.

Take in chunks of visual information quickly.

Use visual information meaningfully.

Learn long routines visually and are motivated to repeat familiar routines.

Understand and use concrete, context free information and rules based expectations.

Concentrate on topics of specific interest, often for long periods of time.

Autism is not the end of the world...

just the beginning of a new one. --Sally Meyer, mother

Joseph

A little boy

sits alone-in his mystery.

His eyes gaze into nothing

He doesn't speak.

He's alone-inside.

He is loved but shows love only on his terms.

Time passes, the boy grows into a man.

His eyes now gaze upon us

as he laughs

as he loves.

He remains silent. His broken pieces now together but the cracks remain.

He's an inspiration, light and hope.

He is a teacher of truth, happiness, and love.

He is of pure innocence.

And a little boy he will always be.
