Second graders have a variety of reading opportunities at this level. In "Guided Reading Groups" children read with a small number of other students who read at the same reading level. Then, appropriate activities related to that book and to the student's abilities are completed. Children also experience reading through D.E.A.R. (Drop everything and read), a time for quiet reading of their choice. Finally, through "Read Alouds" stories are read to the students by Mrs. Schumacher. |

We follow the Harcourt Brace Basil Series to cover grammar and language skills. These skills are then carried over across the curriculum as appropriate. For writing, we are following the 6+1 trait writing process. The traits we have studied can be seen above Mrs. Schumacher's desk the next time you vist. |

"Everyday Math" is the series we use for math and it is used "everyday". The math program offers many "games" for the students that enable them to learn about math in a fun, hands-on way. We also have one day of math a week when we only play math games! It is a lot of fun and I can assure you that the students are learning. |

We will be learning about geography, history and citizenship. Much of what we do in Social Studies has to do with how we live in our community and at school. |

The science curriculum offers a wide variety of exciting topics. We begin by doing a unit on dinosaurs, which includes making fossils and a dinosaur environment complete with a dinosaur's eggs! We also have units on magnets, soils, light and butterflies. |

A field trip to The Little Farmer is an October tradition. The children also earn marbles for good behavior and once the jar is full, we have a "Marble Party" with marble cake of course. We also do several cooking activities which is usually a follow up activity to a "Read Aloud" story. We have a student "class star" each week who is the line leader for the week, is allowed to bring in a pet, and to read his or her favorite poem or story to the class. |
