Media Philosophy / General Outline

The Library Media Program is the core of the educational process. It is responsible for creatively and effectively providing resources for all aspects of the educational program, while remaining responsive to the individual needs of its patrons. The Media Specialist instructs students in skills related to reading and research and in the processing, evaluation and use of information, including technology. Through the media program students will enjoy and appreciate literature. They will receive life-long learning skills and a positive attitude toward libraries. The Media Specialist and the Media Assistant also supervise and maintain all ongoing and daily functions of the school media center, including the evaluation, selection, and requisition of new media center materials.

Library media skills are taught at Lincoln School by our Media Specialist through flexible scheduling. Flexible scheduling, which encourages both scheduled and informal visits, allows these skills to be integrated into the curriculum through a collaborative effort between teacher and Media Specialist. All classrooms are also scheduled once a week for a 25 minute block of time. At this time the Media Assistant checks out books to students and also reads a story to the younger grades. The Media Specialist runs "Computer PALS" twice a week in the computer lab (older and younger students work together on a computer) and also meets with a Junior Great Books group of second grade students once a week.
