Mrs. Schuylze and Mrs. Philbin are using Guided Reading with small groups to teach reading. Each day children meet in their group to read stories, learn strategies and discuss story ideas. As children become confident with their reading skills they move on to more challenging levels of reading. |

Each day students take home a 'book bag' containing three or four books at his/her reading level to read to family members. Families note the days spent reading on a calendar. School days begin with children choosing new books and then practicing for that night's reading. Families are involved with daily reading practice and students become more confident! |

First and second graders interact with stories and poems during a Shared Reading time each morning. |

First and second graders write every day. Students are developing their skills through journal writing, group stories, reactions to science and math lessons and in writing individual books. A word wall in the classroom helps students use accurate spelling. Classroom dictionaries also help with spelling skills. Children also work to learn how to write a rough draft of an original story and then edit it for any corrections. Here we learn to write with proper punctuation, capital letters and use interesting complete sentences. Once the editing is done, children can then write a final copy to be published. |

Our mornings include a Morning Message. Teachers and children work together to write a message to remind us of the day's events and special happenings. These writing exercises provide opportunities to model and practice good writing techniques. It is through these lessons, other small group lessons and individual writing that first and second graders are taught the Six-Traits of Writing. |

Each day children learn, develop and practice reading and writing skills through Literacy Centers. Children rotate through centers such as: the writing area, reading print around the room, reading and illustrating poetry, a listening center, computer skills, buddy reading, an ABC center with a variety of letter and word skills and a creative dramatics center. |

Students meet with their grade level for science and social studies. Each grade has learning standards to be addressed. This year first graders will explore plant parts, weather, matter, space and animals. Second graders will be learning about magnets, forces (push and pull), rocks and soil, simple machines, dinosaurs and life cycles with an emphasis on the life of a butterfly. In areas of social studies both grades will learn about maps, basic functions of laws in a community, community interrelations in terms of economies and citizens working together. |

ROUTINES AND SPECIAL ACTIVITIES: Children take part in Calendar Activities each day. These activities reinforce language and math skills. Daily Helpers have responsibilities each day. Children rotate through the 'helper' jobs throughout the year. When a child loses a tooth we note it on our Tooth Chart. Each week a child is chosen as our Star of the Week. Children bring in pictures and items of importance to share. The star also completes a poster with information about themselves. Author Studies are a way for children to become familiar with a variety of authors and story genres. This year we may explore the works of Kevin henkes, Norman Bridwell, Tomie de Paola and many others. |
