Girl and boy reading a book

In First Grade, one of the most exciting things we do is learn how to read! We start the year by creating a class book called "Getting to Know You". Each first grader has a page about him or her. Once completed, we all take turns reading it.

We also work in small groups to learn how to read. While working in "Centers", we do "Reading Around the Room", and partner reading. We also have books read to us and do special activities with them.

Another type of reading we do is D.E.A.R. During this time, we read books from our bucket that have been selected especially for us. This is followed by a time to read anything we choose. We each have our own poetry binder that was created from all of the poems learned in our pocket chart.

An important part of our classroom reading development is our "Word Wall". As we learn new words on our first grade reading list we add them to our wall. Understanding and using these words is helping us to extend our word knowledge and reading ability.

Along with reading, we do a lot of writing in the first grade. We write in our journal several times a week.

We also do writing activities during "Centers", like "Writing Around the Room". In "Magnetic Letter Creation", we try to find as many words in another that we can. We also do letter writing activities such as letters to Santa Claus and Valentines.

Our students write books individually as well as in a group.Come check out Our Classroom Alphabet book, I Am..., I Like..., and the wide variety of stories we have written using the Writing Process!

Coins

We have a new math series called Every Day Math. Every day we use real money with magnets on to make the number of the number of days we are in school!

We play a lot of games in math such as the "Penny, Nickel, Dime Exchange Game", "Domino Top It", and the "Two Fisted Penny Game".

We are working on telling time using the minute and hour hand and measurement using standard and metric measure.

Fireman

The community is one of our focuses in this area. We have been studying about maps and community helpers. October was Fire Prevention Month, and along with many classroom activities, we visited the local fire station.

A hugh focus due to national events has been on American Pride, or patriotism. We are learning about our nation and its people through Weekly Readers; holidays; America, the song; the Pledge of Allegiance; and many other activities.
