Lincoln School History


The present Lincoln School is the third school building on the site. The first school was erected here in 1859. It was a small wooden structure which later one got an addition that doubled its size. It was known as the Algoma Street School, and later on, the First Ward School. The building was the first school built by the City of Oshkosh.

In 1888 and 1889 a new school was built. This large red brick building was also called First Ward School. Later on the name was changed to Seventh Ward School and early last century it was renamed Lincoln School. It was originally built without a central heating system, although a boiler from a riverboat was later installed to heat the entire building. A picture of the school follows:

Our present Lincoln School was opened to students in the fall of 1964. It was a two-story modern design that included such innovations as movable dividers, air conditioning and wiring for television. A current picture follows:
