“In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future.”

Alex Haley

Carrel Family Christmas photo 2006My family includes children Cody and Cheyenne and husband, Thom Nustad. A favorite memory for us is visiting the Eskimo village in Alaska where I used to teach. Thom is the Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at Lawrence University. Thom and I have co-led a trip to the Stratford Theatre Festival for the last several summers. Let us know if you are interested! Our extended family includes a group of friends that meet together every other week to support one another – and we are grateful!

As long as I remember, teaching and a love for talk have been a part of my being. I was raised in southern Indiana by a teacher, found joy in speech and theatre performances throughout school, had a pivotal learning experience in Haiti as a teenager, taught speech/theatre in my home town high school for a few years, moved to Alaska for a magnificent teaching adventure with the Yupiit Eskimos in Akiachak, moved on to Denver for graduate school and finally, landed my “dream job” (seriously!) here at UW-Oshkosh in 1991. Being able to study and teach this subject as my profession is a tremendous privilege. Since my first child Cody was born (1992) my personal goal has been to have all the laundry done at once. (I have yet to accomplish that goal!)
