Geography 102

[Indicative only -- Refer to the syllabus for a specific semester for the actual course details.]

Course Abstract

The study of the world beyond our immediate horizon is an ancient pursuit that has intrigued explorers (professionals and amateurs) since the beginning of recorded history. In today’s world of global economic linkages amidst a dynamic system of nation-states, knowledge of world regional geography takes on added importance. The city of Oshkosh, for instance, is linked to places as diverse as Mexican maquiladora plants, the poppy fields of the Golden Triangle, and Persian Gulf tanker depots.

This course will provide an introduction to geography of the major world regions. We will chart the physical, environmental, demographic, cultural, economic, and political complexity of each region, looking for common features and key differences.

Required Text
David L. Clawson, Douglas L. Johnson, Viola Haarmann, and Merrill L. Johnson World Regional Geography. Upper Saddle River: Prentice Hall.

Grading:
Your grade for this course will be based mainly on four exams, each of which is worth 60 points. Exams two through four are NOT cumulative.

Each exam will include 45-48 multiple choice questions based on the text readings and classroom discussions since the last exam AND 12-15 multiple choice map questions.

Attendance is not taken but the single most important reason why students fail this course is poor attendance.
