Environmental Studies 490: Senior Seminar

MID-TERM SUMMARY

 

This assignment is your opportunity to take the next step in successfully completing your thesis.

It will involve both the types of information in your weekly progress reports as well as additional ones.

It should be a pproximately five to seven pages (typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, Times New Roman 12 point, with page numbers).

 

This summary of work-in-progress should include:

1. Information from weekly updates.

  • Topic.
  • Major issues and list of sub-issues put in the form of an outline that you plan to use. So this is a combination of list of issues and outline.
  • Complete list of sources (books, articles, websites, interviews, etc.) Organize this by types and alphabetize within each type:
    • Scholarly books
    • Scholarly ( peer-reviewed) journals
    • Newspapers
    • Advocacy groups (usually websites)
    • Scientific websites
    • Governmental sources (documents or websites)
    • Business sources
    • “Anti-environmental” sources (usually websites).

    Use proper bibliographic style.Include where/how you found theses sources (e.g., specific internet search tools).

  • ALL Abstracts of key articles, etc., that you have written up to this point. Asterisk those you have done the last week.
  • Complete list of internet search tools you have used so far. For example:
    • Lexis-Nexus
    • Social Science Full Text
    • Environmental Science
    • JSTOR
    • Academic Search Elite
    • Science Citation Index
    • Social Science Citation Index
    • Columbia Earthscape
    • Library of Congress.

    Students are expected to become familiar with a wide variety of search tools.

2. New types of information.

  • A brief summary of the natural science, social science, and humanities dimensions of the project. One paragraph each.
  • Workplan schedule for the rest of the semester , with individual entries of what you plan to have completed for each week for the remainder of the semester. Keep in mind specific due dates in the syllabus.
  • Concerns and questions you have about the project.

Approximately 5% of final grade each.
