Analysis of engagement in the writings of Terry Tempest WilliamsThis assignment has three purposes. (1) To prepare you for class discussion (like the study questions, precis, and rhetorical analyses. (2) To continue the discussion of the idea of a “literature of engagement” from the previous class. And (3) to give you an opportunity to briefly engage one of the prominent themes in Terry Tempest Williams’s writings: engagement. This theme acts somewhat like a meta-theme, as it relates to her views on the personal experience of nature, politics of wilderness protection, the body, family, etc. So this assignment may well relate directly to your final paper on her. The paper is to be a response to the question, “In what ways do Terry Tempest Williams’s writings exemplify the literature of engagement.” Because the paper is so short, you will need to pick one or a few aspects of her writings, one or a few texts, and one or a few aspects of a “literature of engagement.” Also, because the paper is so short, do not include long quotations. Nothing more than a sentence or a couple of very short sentences. Instead, cite the source and page number of the passage you are discussing. Do not spend time on an introductory paragraph, though in the first sentence or two you should communicate what the topic is.
What a successful paper has Sound understanding of the idea of a “literature of engagement” and of Terry Tempest Williams’s writing.
