Notes on Writing a Paper

The assignment calls for neither an informational paper nor a research paper in the normal sense. It is a critical thinking paper.

1. Quotes: master the texts concerning your topic. Your paper should be grounded in the texts.

2. Questions:

• the paper should be animated by issues and questions about the topic
• use dialectical analysis to respond to issues
• use the texts in your response
• use terms and views we’ve discussed earlier in the course to analyze the text and raise and respond to issues.

Avoid background or biography of author unless directly related to your topic. Assume your reader knows the basics about Abbey, (as if your audience was someone who took the course a few years ago and remembers the basics).

Make lists

• of passages and main points related to your issues (e.g., philosophy of nature, critique of society, activism)
• of possible problems and limitations with his views
