The Circle of Fifths
Going the other way on the circle gives us the
flat keys.
Going from C major to the left, we go to its fourth scale degree- F,
and this becomes our next key.
We add one flat to the key signature for each scale in this direction
in the order B E A D G C F, discussed in
the last lesson.
Notice that the bottom of the circle contains three keys that overlap.
These are enharmonic keys because their starting pitch (or tonic) is enharmonic
with the starting pitch of another scale.
The enharmonic keys are:
C sharp - D flat
F sharp - G flat
B - C flat
