Purpose of Stage Lighting:

To allow the work of the other theatre artists to be seen To enhanses and support the work of the whole. Adaquate seeing is paramount Manner and style consistant with the other designers. Lighting must be sensitive to the other elements Can make or break them. Lighting is also one of the most powerful areas of design. Directly addresses the emotions and sensibilities of audience.

Functions of Stage Lighting:

--Selective visibility - see what should be seen, hide what should not. --Revelation of form - reveal 3D quality of the actor & scenery. --Effective motivation - Probability. Scenery establishes place, lighting establishes conditions. --Composition - reveal and emphasize the nature of the setting. Scenery is structure; Lighting determines how scenery will appear. Light itself invisible, only seen as it acts on something else. --Mood and Atmosphere - Psychological and emotional milliue. --Reinforce the Theme - Emphasize dramatic structure of play. Plays have structure. Introduction, conflict, climax, resolution. Lighting must parellel structure. Unity: consistancy in style and approach. Time: light also reveals passage of time.

Role of the Lighting Designer:

-Provide lighting consistant with and enhansing work of others. -Make everyone else look good without drawing unnecessary attention to oneself.
