University Elementary and University High School, Iowa City, Iowa (until its closure in 1972).
B.A. in Biological Sciences with Honors - University of California, Santa Barbara. Adviser: Demorest Davenport. My CO-favorite college course was my year of Invertebrate Zoology with "Dav". I will never forget the field trips to the intertidal zones in the vans. I think Dr. Davenport's favorite animal was the nudibranch. My CO-favorite college course was my semester of Neurobiology with "SKF" and Dr. Case in 1978. I had no way of knowing that I was meeting my future lab mates that semester: Ken Linberg wrote and illustrated the course manual, and Joe Immel and John Flannery were the teaching assistants.
Ph.D. in Physiology & Cell Biology - University of California, Santa Barbara. Retinal Cell Biology, Adviser: Steven K. Fisher This degree program, top to bottom and start to finish, was a gateway to the best life I could have imagined. My "home" lab continues to do ground breaking work too!
NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow in Physiology & Ophthalmology - University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Adviser: Eric M. Lasater. Helga Kolb was a major influence and mentor, too, and it's a pleasure to collaborate with some vision scientists who came to the U of U later on.
