Step 6: Practicum

Practicum (tuition is required)

The EXCEL Center Add-On Practicum provides candidates authentic practice in the new licensure area. Practicum is undertaken after all program requirements are finished including successful completion of coursework and submission of a passing score on the appropriate PRAXIS II content exam, unless permission is otherwise granted.

Placements

Our Add-On candidates bring their own unique combination of work experience and current licenses to the program. They determine their own Add-On Practicum placements, which are generally a three credit* experience and completed “on the job.” This experience requires a total of 60 hours of face-to-face teaching in the developmental level or content area of the desired add-on license. The structure of allotted time may be adjusted to fit individual school schedules and subject offerings.

Assessment/Evaluation

Varied measures are utilized during the Add-On Practicum experience to both evaluate a candidate’s progress and also to collect data to be used in the on-going process of program improvement. In conjunction with the departments involved in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s teacher preparation programs, the EXCEL Center evaluation instruments are designed to reflect the College of Education and Human Services’ Conceptual Framework (“The Educator as a Caring Intellectual”) and the Wisconsin Educator Standards. If a school district's observation and evaluation forms correspond to the Standards, they may be used in lieu of the University's forms.

Add On License:
Adaptive PE

The EXCEL Center is great!!!!!!!! As a full time teacher who also works most nights as a WIAA Official, finding the time and program to pursue my Adaptive Physical Education Certification was hard to do. Then I found UW-Oshkosh and the EXCEL Center. The staff informed me of what I needed, and did all the leg work and registration for me. They were so helpful when I needed questions answered or if I didn't know what to do next. The course work was of great importance to me and the online classes fit great into my busy schedule. I was able to complete the certification in one school year!!! I have and will continue to HIGHLY recommend UW-Oshkosh and the EXCEL Center to any teachers who are looking to further their education while pursuing further certifications.
