Program Coordinator (Half-time w/benefits)
Purpose
We are an environmental non-profit working in metro area schools in need of a dynamic educator who can effectively collaborate with culturally diverse students and communities. Responsibilities are: working with upper elementary, middle, and high school teachers, students and administrators to facilitate locally-based and multiple perspective environmental service-learning curricula and projects in Minneapolis and St. Paul schools, with emphasis on the urban environment, professional development of teachers, program assessment, and coordinating other administrative duties of the program(s) as necessary.
Accountabilities
Programming
Co-administer one or two environmental education programs in Minneapolis and St. Paul schools, 5th-12 grade. One program, City Connections, is a curriculum focusing on environmental knowledge and introduction of problem-solving skills. The other program, Urban Stewards, focuses on implementation of skills through carrying out environmental service-learning projects in local communities.
Recruit teachers and co-coordinate teacher workshops for one or both programs that will increase teacher’s development in the use of advanced service-learning techniques and urban environmental concepts.
Contribute to the design of a comprehensive assessment of the programs as a whole as well as its impacts on students and teachers. Monitor and implement the assessment. Use analysis of assessment to guide work.
Ensure program delivery meets goals and objectives set forth in current operating grants.
Work with other coordinator(s) and the Executive Director to maintain a dynamic vision for Eco Education programs and to change as needed to meet the changing needs of the schools within which we work.
Networking
Network and establish long-term relationships with educators.
Establish culturally sensitive relationships with parents/parent groups and community members.
Meet with school groups to promote and market programs.
Attend conferences as designated.
Management
Report to Executive Director
Participate in team decision making
Assist in grant writing, report/communicate with existing grantors
Assist in budgeting and planning
Preferred Qualifications ____
Minimum two years experience working in an educational setting with youth 5th-12th grade or teachers
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals with different cultural backgrounds. Experience in facilitating groups of adults or young people to make positive change in their communities. Experience working with adults, urban youth or youth development, service-learning and/or schools. Excellent organizational, communication, and technology skills, program planning, and team oriented. Interest in community issues. Must have reliable transportation for travel to schools every day.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Organizing and motivating groups of people. A commitment to empowering others. Knowledge of Mpls./St. Paul area and cultural groups preferred. Interest and ability in keeping abreast of current research and techniques in areas of teacher training, environmental education, service-learning, community revitalization and community problem-solving.
Compensation, Starting Date and Benefits
Salary: dependent on experience Starting Date: July/Aug 2008
Benefits: pro-rated health, education funds Closing Date: when filled
In the future, this position may move to full time
