Core Course Sequencing
The most efficient and effective way to make it through the core courses is to follow the following sequences.
Environment and Science Area (two courses, 7 credits)
1. Begin with one introductory environmental science course
- Biology 105: Biological Concepts: Unity (fall, spring), or
- Chemistry 103: Introduction to Environmental Chemistry (fall), or
- Geography 121: Physical Geography I: Weather and Climate (fall, spring), or
- Geology 150: Environmental Geology (fall, spring)
2. Then take the intermediate, interdisciplinary environmental science course:
- Env Stds 260: Environmental Science (spring)
- Prerequisite: An introductory environmental science course is a prerequisite for ES 260
Environment and Society Area (two courses, 6 credits)
1. Begin with the introduction to environmental studies course:
- Env Stds 101: Seminar on Environmental Issues (fall, fall interim, spring)
2. Then take the intermediate, interdisciplinary course on environment and society:
- Env Stds 261: Environment and Society (fall, spring)
- Prerequisite: Taking 101 before 261 is the preferred sequence, but ES 101 is not an official prerequisite for ES 261 .
Environment and Values Area (two courses, 6 credits)
1. Begin with one introductory environmental humanities course:
- Env Stds 162: Environmental Ethics (spring) or
- Env Stds 243: Introduction to Nature Writing (fall) or
- Env Stds 244: Japanese Nature Writing (spring)
2. Then take the intermediate, interdisciplinary environmental humanities course:
- Env Stds 282: Environment, Community, and Values (fall)
- Prerequisite: ES 101 AND either ES 162,or ES 243, or ES 244.
Interdisciplinary Seminars (two courses, 6 credits)
1.Take the advanced course on environmental science and policy:
- Env Stds 370: Environmental Science, Policy, and Problem Solving (fall)
- Prerequisites: Env Stds 260, Env Stds 261
- Normally taken in the junior or senior year
2. Take the senior capstone course
- Env Stds 490: Senior Seminar (spring)
- Prerequisites: 18 credits in the ES core.
- Normally taken in the student’s final spring semester.
