Animals in Society

Course: 188

Section: 019

Instructor: Cole, Stewart

Description:  This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of essay writing through the subject of Animals in Society.  Using as our conceptual lens the University Studies Program's Signature Question, "How do people understand and create a more sustainable world?," we will explore the linkages between the issue of sustainability and our relationships with animals both in American society and worldwide.  Topics to be considered include hunting, animals as sources of food and clothing, animals as pets, biodiversity, extinction, and the human/animal divide.  Please note, however, that this is above all a writing course, and so all of our reading on these topics will serve the central purpose of teaching students the fundamentals of grammar, thesis development, essay structure, and overall rhetorical eloquence.

(please note: section topics and descriptions are subject to change)
