In this class we will read several non-fiction accounts by American writers of their trips across the United States by various means (car, camper, bicycle, boat, etc.) and of each writer's experiences thinking, talking, and learning about this country, his fellow citizens, and himself. We will spend approximately two weeks on each book, discuss in class what we have read, and then complete one writing assignment keyed to each text, focusing on what we have learned from it, how it resembles traveling and personal encounters we have had, and those parts of the narrative we consider most worthy of responding to and remembering.
