188-015 WBIS: A is for Ark; Z is for Zoo
Instructor: Paul Niesen
Description:
Why do human cultures put living animals on display, whether in circuses or in zoos? Whereas circuses are an itinerant endeavor, many human communities have designated and funded zoological gardens for the pleasure of citizens and, with growing intensity, for the preservation of the species. How have the methods of and reasons for animal display changed over the centuries? Is the zoo the last best hope for the preservation of endangered species?
