188-007 WBIS: Diversity in Literature
Instructor: Morgan Foster
Description:
We read books to better understand human nature and to understand the world around us. What happens to readers when their world is depicted in a racist, stereotypical, and/or offensive way—or, perhaps worse yet, what happens when their world is completely ignored in literature? To help answer this, our class will look at trends in young adult literature; specifically, two periods of growth in YAL and what those trends mean for readers. We will compare and contrast publishing patterns of the 1960s-'70s through present-day, paying particular attention to literature by and for African American readers.
