343/543-001 Nature Writing: Writing the Anthropocene

Instructor: Douglas Haynes

Description:

This course will focus on contemporary literary nonfiction about living in the Anthropocene: the current epoch in Earth’s geological history defined by human-caused changes on a geologic-scale. Films, short stories, poems, and theoretical texts from writers, artists, and philosophers around the world may also be discussed. Issues that will be considered include global climate change, urbanization, and climate justice activism. Students will also understand their own writing/multi-media projects that immerse them in local aspects of the Anthropocene to generate fist-hand, true accounts.
