377-001 Special Major Figures of American Literature

Instructor: Roberta Maguire

Description:

This course will focus on the fiction of Toni Morrison as well as the critical response to it. We will read four of Morrison’s novels—Beloved, Jazz, Love, and her most recent, God Help the Child.  We will consider shared themes across the fiction, including parent-child relationships, race, and US history, as well as the technical and stylistic innovations Morrison brings to her work to illuminate those themes. Leading discussion, writing response papers, and producing a formal research paper will be among the required assignments.
