364-001 19th Century British Novel

Description:
This course is an upper-division survey of the novel genre during the late-Romantic and Victorian periods. By the end of the course, students will (1) gain an understanding of some of the major cultural, social and intellectual issues of importance to nineteenth-century Britains; (2) become acquainted with important nineteenth-century novels by Shelley, E. Bronte, Eliot, Scott, and Hardy; (3) appreciate the connections of literary forms to social and historical contexts; and (4) make arguments about those connections between texts and contexts in their own writing.
