Advertising and Public Relations

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "firms in the advertising and public relations services industry prepare advertisements for other companies and organizations and design campaigns to promote the interests and image of their clients." However, David W. Guth and Charles Marsh, in Public Relations: A Values Driven Approach, point out that advertising and public relations are two different types of work: public relations work is mainly about "relationship management" (7) while "advertising is the use of controlled media" in order to "influence the actions of targeted publics" (10). Those best suited for these positions have "the capacity for clear, accurate communications--both written and oral--and people skills" (Meyer 10).
