Katy
Werginz
Year: Senior, graduating '09
Hometown:
Waupaca
Major: Criminal justice
Goals: To work for the FBI, CIA or ATF
Although her college career was interrupted by a year spent in
Iraq as a sergeant and team leader, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh
senior Katy Werginz made her mark both on the soccer field and
in the classroom.
As a forward on the Titan women's soccer
team, Werginz scored 22 goals during the three years she played.
In the classroom,
she juggled her role in the Wisconsin Army National Guard with
her rigorous criminal justice coursework.
"The military has put
me into many different situations that really challenged my
mental toughness and reaction to extreme
situations," she said. "College will throw a lot of opportunities
your way, good and bad, especially during your freshman year."
Inspired to study criminal justice by the
popular television show X-Files, Werginz says she hopes her future
career allows
her to be a part of something important in the world. While
television may have inspired her, her professors have shown
her that evening
dramas are not representative of the real world.
"Right
now, I'm really looking forward to my criminal investigation
course and finding out what really happens during an investigation
unlike what we see watching Law and Order and the CSIs,"
she laughed.
"UW Oshkosh is a great campus that is only
getting better and better," she added.
