What all 10 of the 2013 University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Alumni Association award winners have in common, of course, is a degree from UWO and a good dose of Titan pride. After that, their life stories are as varied as their majors.

During Homecoming Weekend, these coaches, teachers, journalists and business and management professionals will be honored for their career and community successes. Until then, they share here how their days on campus have made an impact on their lives.

UW Oshkosh offers a first-rate education. The professors provide a current, relevant and engaging course of study, and they are devoted to the success of their students.
The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, or NCLEX, is the standard barometer of a nurse’s knowledge and skill. For the last eight quarters, no group of students in the UW System has earned a pass rate like UW Oshkosh College of Nursing undergraduates have. They have had the highest NCLEX first-time pass rate of all UW System schools with 96 percent.

UW Oshkosh’s new University Studies Program—which launched this semester—already is garnering attention as a national model for general education reform. The Association of American Colleges and Universities has touted UW Oshkosh’s innovative program as the lead case study in its new publication Ensuring Quality and Taking High-Impact Practices to Scale.

In 2013, UW Oshkosh celebrates five years as a Fair Trade institution. The University’s Fair Trade journey is continuously evolving through extended offerings on campus. The University currently offers a number of fair trade clothing and jewelry items sold in University Books and More, and fair trade coffee and tea can be found in many campus locations as well.

UW Oshkosh’s new general education program

Alumni invited to serve as USP mentors

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh alumni have an unprecedented opportunity to serve and learn side-by-side with sophomores completing a community experience as part of the University Studies Program, our transformed general education program.

“We are delighted that UW Oshkosh alumni are interested in giving back to UW Oshkosh, to current students and to the community,” USP director Lori Carrell said. “USP alumni mentors will be role models, demonstrating civic engagement as they volunteer.”

An estimated 70 to 80 alumni will be needed to serve, starting with the fall 2014 school year, in the USP’s Quest III courses.

Many of the community experiences—ranging from collecting soil samples to interviewing farmers for an oral history project and assisting with a financial literacy workshop at the Boys and Girls Club—will take place within 30 miles of the UWO campus.

However, alumni who live further away may still be able to participate as some community experiences may occur in the evenings, on weekends or during a concentrated time frame, such as spring break.

Mentors will be matched with community experiences/Quest III courses in January, with mentor training to follow in spring 2014in time to begin serving during the 2014–2015 academic year.Questions may be directed to Michael Lueder, community experience coordinator, at luederm@uwosh.edu or (920) 424-1269.

GET INVOLVED

Interested alumni are invited to complete an online interest form found in the Alumni Mentors section at uwosh.edu/usp. The form will include expectations for each community experience.

Comments from Engage Online

USP
I am excited to see the changes happening in the general education curriculum, and I really wish the University Studies Program had been there when I was starting at UWO … I took class from three of the professors cited in the article who developed the program. I can attest to their dedication to the success of students in all fields. Based on my knowledge of them and the article, I am confident that the development of this program was exhaustive, comprehensive and research-based. This stands in stark contrast with a traditional, anecdotal/experience-based approach often used to develop policy. This approach is a breath of fresh air and should be a model for policy-making of all types. —Katie Gruber ’10, Coloma

Alumni Profile: Sandi Van Sistine
Sandi is a remarkable woman who does so much for everyone without seeking the limelight. I am very proud of my Alpha Phi sister. — Marie Giese ‘68, Stevensville, Mich.

Student Profile: Jake White
Congratulations, Jake! Nice work, nice story. — Kenneth Liske, UWO associate professor of music education
