Through the Lens

Serengeti Radiance: University of Wisconsin Oshkosh experimental psychology graduate student Julie George, of Waupaca, captured this shot on an early-morning safari in the Serengeti, as part of a three-week, study-abroad trip to Tanzania. She traveled with a group of students in the Animal Behavior Observation Program to collect cross-cultural data on environmental attitudes and time perspectives.

She used a digital SLR camera with a telephoto zoom to take this sunrise image from a jeep. As they traveled at 45 to 50 miles per hour on a bumpy gravel road, George said she had to “use some strategy in body position and strength” to get the picture. “Sometimes you have to take a risk in order to achieve something great,” she said.
