Athletic/Exercise Leadership

Athletics and Exercise Leadership Certificate Program



The Athletic and Exercise Leadership Certificate graduate program is designed to provide leaders of athletics and exercise programs with the knowledge needed to meet the challenges of 21st century programs.

 

 

 

Audience: Coaches, athletic trainers, athletic directors, physical education teachers, referees, and related professionals

Length: Two years, 18 credits. You will be taking one 3-credit course per semester.
Fall 2007 Cohort only, your group will only take three of the classes as a cohort -- Current Perspectives in Physical Education and Sports: Athletics Issues (Kinesiology 750) fall 2007, The Physiological Basis of the Conditioning Process (Kinesiology 730) spring 2008, and Current Perspectives in Physical Education and Sports: Athletics Management (Kinesiology 750) summer 2008. Org & Admin and Legal Aspects will be taken with general Ed Leadership students, Internship will be arranged to meet your schedule.

Meeting Times: Wednesdays 6-9 pm (We intend to maintain this time and night throughout the program to best accommodate coaching schedules.)

Cohort Format: You will progress through the program as a group with the same individuals

Cost: Standard UW Oshkosh graduate fees and tuition ($368.23 per credit Spring 2007)

Can this certificate program apply to a Master’s Degree? Yes! The MS Educational Leadership degree program will accept all credits. This certificate program will constitute half of your degree.

To apply to the Certificate Program: Complete a Graduate School application form (All Applicants - Admission Application). Indicate your program is the Athletics and Exercise Leadership Certificate Program. If you also want to earn your MS Educational Leadership degree, complete a second application and indicate your program is Educational Leadership. You can use the same recommendations for both programs. Only one $45 application fee is required. All forms are submitted to the Graduate Studies Office.

To register for classes: Complete a Graduate School registration form. Mail with your program application to the Graduate Studies Office.


Learning Outcomes
You will:

  • Explore and apply leadership theories in athletics and exercise settings to meet current challenges.
  • Explore educational and administrative structures, roadblocks and solutions especially as they relate to athletics and exercise programming.
  • Discuss contemporary issues and solutions in athletics and exercise programs.
  • Apply basic physiological concepts to applied problems.Discuss issues and practices related to athletics management.
  • Apply knowledge of legal and ethical practices in athletics and exercise settings.
  • Provide leadership to solve real world athletics and exercise challenges in an internship setting.

Required Classes (3 credits each):

  1. Organization and Administration of Educational Systems (EdL 730)
  2. Current Perspectives in Physical Education and Sports: Athletics Issues (Kinesiology 750)
  3. The Physiological Basis of the Conditioning Process (Kinesiology 730)
  4. Current Perspectives in Physical Education and Sports: Athletics Management (Kinesiology 750)
  5. Legal Aspects of Education (EdL 735)
  6. Internship (EdL 793)

Cohort I only (Fall 2007)
Take the EdL 730 and 735 classes as regular Educational Leadership class offerings as opposed to special cohort sections.This is to accommodate those of you already in the MS Educational Leadership program. We will be starting the certificate sequence for you with the Athletics Issues class.
