Important Information

Read Your Acceptance Letter

When you are officially accepted into the MS  Educational Leadership program or Certificate program, you should receive a letter from the Graduate Studies Office. Please be sure to read it. It includes your student ID number and more.

E-Mail

Please be sure to read your university email at least once per week. Email, using your university email address, is the only way many important university messages are sent. Also, when professors send email messages to the entire class they will most likely use your university email. If you don't want to check another account, forward your mail to where you will see it. Click on the "How Do I...?" link for instructions.

D2L

Many courses are using our online content management system called D2L which is short for Desire to Learn. On D2L you are likely to find your course syllabus, readings, and other expectations. Be sure to check D2L before your class starts to know if your professor expects you to have completed readings or other assignments prior to your first class meeting. You access D2L by going to the UW Oshkosh homepage, clicking on TitanServices in the top right corner of the homepage, selecting D2L, then logging on with your email username and password. You can then check each of your courses.

Paying for Credits, Checking Financial Aid, and Checking Grades

TitanWeb is our portal for grades, finances, class registrations and more. Here's an update on it from Grad Studies (February 2009).

There is a new feature in TitanWeb that allows you to give someone else access to three different screens of information in your TitanWeb record.  The three screens are:
·  Financial aid awards
·  Grades and term statistics
·  View and pay tuition and fees

You can give the person access to just one of the screens, two, or all three.  It’s up to you.  So, for example, if your spouse or parent(s) would like to see this information, you can give him or her access.  When you go into Titan Web, you create an account for each person.  They are assigned a User I.D. and password, which allows them to log-in to Titan Web.  They will only see the screens of information that you choose.  It is your responsibility to give your spouse or parent(s) the User I.D. & password.

NOTE:  This doesn’t allow the person to call the university to discuss your grades, financial aid, or tuition & fees.  It just allows them to see the information on Titan Web. If you want to allow them to speak with someone at the university, you need to sign a Release of Information Form in the Office of Student Affairs in Dempsey 148.

If you’d like to give access to another person logon on to TitanWeb, go to the Personal Information section (bottom left) on your student center page.  The link is called Grant Access to Others.  Detailed instructions are available at:
http://www.uwosh.edu/home/current-students/instructions-for-granting-access-in-titan-web

The privacy of your student records is covered by a federal law called the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment.

More information regarding FERPA is below:

Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (Buckley Amendment)

Students have rights regarding their education records.  These rights are covered by the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA).  A student has:  1) the right to inspect and review his/her education records; 2) the right to request an amendment to a record the student believes is inaccurate; 3) the right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in education records; and 4) the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the university to comply with the requirements of FERPA.

There are several exceptions to the third point above, including:
·        Disclosure is permitted without consent to university officials with a legitimate educational interest.
·        Disclosure is permitted without consent to any other educational institution in which a student is currently enrolled.

Disclosure of “directory information” is permitted to non-university sources without the permission of the student.  Directory information is defined as “the student’s name, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail address, date and place of birth, classification, major field of study, dates of attendance, full-time/part-time status, degrees and awards received, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student.”  For example, if a parent calls and asks for information regarding a student, the only information that can be legally released to the parent is directory information.

A student may sign a form in the Office of Student Affairs, Dempsey 148, which allows educational records to be released to a third party/parent.  Any student not desiring their directory information to be made public may complete a written request in Dempsey 148.  Please bring a picture I.D. with you to the office.

The University’s FERPA policy is stated in the 2008-09 Student Handbook. It is also available at:  www.uwosh.edu/registrar/policies/ferpa.php.   If you have further questions about FERPA, please contact Jean Kwaterski in the Office of Student Affairs at kwatersk@uwosh.edu or 424-4000.
