Earth Charter - UW Oshkosh and Community

Earth Charter Summit 2001

Date: September 29, 2001

Locations: Reeve Union, 3rd Floor, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

UWO was the only Wisconsin university represented among the twelve core sites (other sites around the country participated by taking the downlink from the satellite but were not among the featured campuses). Our event began at 9:45 and ended at 5:30. The morning events consisted of introductory welcomes followed by the satellite feed---including an uplink from Oshkosh. The uplinks from each campus were followed by speeches from David Korten, Steven Rockefeller, and others. The audience was then invited to write questions that could be forwarded to the afternoon panels. Community and campus groups set up tables that were the focus of informal discussions during the lunch hour. The main events of the afternoon were our local panels: the first, consisting of faculty and community experts, responded to audience questions about the larger issues connected with the Earth Charter. The second, which included the Chancellor, Provost, Dean of Letters and Science, Assistant Chancellor, and Head of Facilities Management, heard a report on an environmental audit performed at UW River Falls and then discussed the application of Earth Charter principles on the UWO campus. Discussion was also prompted by audience questions. These panels were followed by informal presentations from area organizations, and the summit ended with a satellite feed featuring Danny Glover and a second round of uplinks from the twelve core sites. The Oshkosh event concluded with live music. For the full program, see below.

Seventy-two people signed in at the summit, and sixty-one took the opportunity to sign the Earth Charter. The organizers were pleased with the response, especially as the Summit was well received and showed immediate signs of becoming a signature event at UW Oshkosh. Plans began almost immediately for the second annual Summit in 2002, to include discussion of initiatives on campus that reflect Earth Charter principles. The event was sponsored by the UW Oshkosh Foundation.

From 9:00am onwards, attendees have the opportunity to sign the Earth Charter
