FVWP provides PD in writing at Merrill Elementary School

IMG_0037 ed1The Fox Valley Writing Project in partnership with Merill Elementary School in Oshkosh was awarded a $20,000 SEED Grant (Supporting Effective Educator Development) from the National Writing Project and the U.S. Department of Education to provide professional development for all K-5 teachers in the school.  The focus of this work, which was identified in collaboration with the Merill faculty, is to develop teachers’ instructional expertise in teaching that is aligned with Common Core State Writing Standards.  The FVWP Leadership Team providing this year-long professional develop includes Nichole Ponzer (Read Elementary, OASD); Greg Kehring (Instructional Support Teacher, OASD); and Amy Sippert (Merrill Elementary, OASD), who is shown top left.

Our professional development work at Merrill includes three strands of work: 1) develoIMG_0011 ed1ping a professional community with a common understanding about the teaching of writing, 2) examining the grade level development of standards for writing informational (explanatory), argumentative (opinion), and narrative (story) texts, and 3) generating inquiry projects in which teachers identify a important teaching questions and implementation projects with the goal of improvement in writing instruction.
