Movers and Shakers: Former SOL President on Inclusive Excellence and Career Services

Last semester, Luis Barrios served as the president of the Student Organization of Latinos. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in December 2011 as a supply chain and operations management major.

Barrios has been the president of SOL for two and half years, taking one year off. He first ran during his sophomore year, and then his junior year. He decided not to run his senior year, but came back in 2011 for his fifth year and decided to run again and won. His motivation to run for president was to include more diversity and involvement into the organization.

He worked closely with the English and Spanish departments as well as admissions. His biggest struggles were recruitment and retention, Barrios said. His favorite part of being president was his personal development and the connections he made.

Barrios said that inclusive excellence is “a hard one” to define. When he thinks of inclusive excellence, he thinks of diversity. Barrios believes SOL represents inclusive excellence.

When asked about his experiences as a diverse student on campus, he said that in the end he “learned how to manage.” Barrios said he was culture shocked when he first arrived at University. He overcame this struggle by joining organizations such as SOL, Omega Delta Phi, and accounting club and by making new friends

As a student in the College of Business, Barrios was required to use the resources offered by Career Services, but he used it for personal reasons as well. Barrios said he drafted his first resume with the help of Career Services. Career Services has been beneficial to him and he will continue to use Career Services in the future, Barrios said.

Barrios especially enjoyed the photo shoot he helped out with for Career Services. He said he would highly recommend Career Services to friends. Barrios believes that some of the information he acquired from Career Services will help him in his future.

While in school, Barrios interned at Miles Kimball. Through his internship, he received a job offer for a management position in Madison, his hometown.

Barrios said that he has used social media, such as LinkedIn, in his job search. A valuable tip Barrios learned in college that will stick with him for the rest of his life is “not to put the napkin on the chair when you get up,” he said.

Wisconsin Career Development Association’s Conference in Madison

On Wednesday morning Chrissy Lambie, Angela Victor and I met bright and early at the fleet vehicle site. After being shocked into a state of alertness by the smell of the biodigester and Starbucks, we headed to Madison for a morning of professional development.

While in Madison Chrissy, Angela and I attended the Wisconsin Career Development Association’s conference on technology in the job search. The focus was on five areas including: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Skype and email/online job applications.

Sarah Barber and Kelly Cuene researched and presented on the topic. Sarah is the special projects manager at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Continuing Studies. Kelly is the assistant director of advising and career planning at UW-Madison.

UWO Career Services already uses and educates students on the above five technologies, but Sarah and Kelly were able to share some of the feedback they have received from employers regarding the use of these technologies.

The staff at Career Services is dedicated to getting their students the best and most up to date information. As a staff, we have professional development goals, which can be met by attending conferences, workshops and educating themselves through books and social media. These goals are in place to make sure the students continue to receive the best information when they visit Career Services.

LinkedIn

  • When job searching please connect to the company you are interviewing rather than the individual interviewing you.
  • The only time you should connect with individuals is if you already have a relationship with them or you are having another connection introduce you.
  • If you have no connections to an individual and don’t know their email address, don’t list them as a friend on LinkedIn just to get the connection. This is awkward; the point of LinkedIn is to connect to people you know with similar professional interests.
  • Don’t forget you can job search on LinkedIn!

Facebook

  • It is very important to connect with the company rather than the individual person.
  • Employers will be checking out your Facebook page. Make sure your privacy settings are high and your profile picture is appropriate.
  • Don’t delete your Facebook profile at the beginning of your job search. Your potential employer will wonder about the content you deleted.

Twitter

  • The importance of Twitter in your job search depends on your industry.
  • Following a company on Twitter can be a great way to research that company.
  • You can connect with both organizations and individuals on Twitter.
  • Make sure your Twitter profile is filled out and you are posting about things relevant to your industry. You want the organization to follow you too.
  • If you are majoring in a field like marketing or journalism you should be using Twitter actively. Your Twitter handle should be at the top of your resume!

Skype

  • Skype can be a green and inexpensive way for companies to interview students, but most companies are still worried about the technical difficulties that can arise.
  • UWO Career Services frequently offers Skype interviews. There is usually a Skype opportunity during mock interviews as well.

E-mail and Online Applications

  • Know that you will probably be applying to jobs online and communicating with employers through email; this communication should be as professional as a research paper. You are not texting!
  • You will probably be filling out an online application. Even most fast food restaurants require online applications.

Keeping your Titan Jobs profile up to date

It can be very beneficial to keep your Titan Jobs profile up to date, and it is important for a number of reasons:

  1. Employers are constantly perusing students’ profiles. This means that they can see information of potential candidates, and the information they encounter can help to form their opinions.
  2. The website is easier to use when all information is up to date. Whether it be applying for jobs or registering for career events, an up-to-date profile can make your use of Titan Jobs simple and efficient.

Updating your profile is really quite easy:

  1. Log in to your Titan Jobs account using your student ID number (username), and password. From here you have a number of options in the menu bar.
  2. For profile information editing, click ‘My Account’ and then ‘My Profile’. This will bring you to your account where there are tabs under which all your information is listed. Simply click the ‘Edit’ link in the upper right hand corner of any one of these tabs, and begin updating.

Some of the most important fields to keep updated include:

* GPA (grade point average)

*Major(s)

*Year in school (e.g. freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior)

*Which jobs you’re looking for (e.g. Full-time, part-time, internships, e



Education Mock Interviews

Excited students dressed to impress filled the Career Services office on Thursday, Oct. 20, to participate in the Education Mock Interviews.

The goal of mock interviews is to help strengthen interviewing skills and provide feedback on resume writing. Company representatives participate in these interviews by meeting one-on-one with a student for approximately 30 minutes. Each session starts with a mock interview followed by the employer feedback on a student’s resume and individual interview presentation. Before attending a mock interview, students are encouraged to attend an Interviewing Workshop which is also held at the Career Services Center.

Employers (listed below) from around the area volunteered to conduct the mock interviews. Their participation in these types of events not only introduces them to potential employees, but allows them to promote their business/organization through the UW Oshkosh campus.

Movers and Shakers: Kat Pecora, UWO journalism student, reveals secrets for a successful college career

Kat Pecora is a journalism major with an emphasis in advertising. She loves all things social media and is a total art fanatic. If she’s not doing homework, she’s probably whipping up some sort of craft project. She’s originally from Monroe, Wis., known for their Cheese Days festival.

“It’s pretty cheesey,” Pecora said.

Five secrets for a successful college career by Kat Pecora:

When I was a freshman, my head was swirling with millions of questions. The last thing on my mind was planning for my future career.  I still have 3 years left to think about that, right?

In my time at UW Oshkosh, I have been a CA, been involved on campus, have become enamored with social media and I have had two internships. Little did I know when I was a freshman that all these things would benefit my career goals.

I am now going into my senior year and will soon be starting my search for jobs. I’m very nervous, but I know that with the connections I have made and the resume I have developed that I will be a strong candidate. Here are my 5 tips for how to rock your time in college and be ready for a job at the end of it.

1) Keep up your GPA
As a freshman, do whatever you can to maintain a great GPA your first year. It’s easier to start off you time in college with a high GPA than try to build it back up at the end.  If you are struggling with a course, don’t be afraid to seek help from your professor or a tutor. They are here to help!

For your resume: Employers pay close attention to this little number and with the job market as competitive as it is, a good GPA is crucial. In some situations, your GPA can determine if you are chosen for a job interview or not. Now that number isn’t everything, but a good GPA with a resume full of campus involvement will really make you stand out.

2) Use Your Resources
What makes college so amazing is all the resources available to you. Your professors are an incredible resource! If you are interested in a particular subject or just want to learn more, any professor would be happy to talk to you. Some other great resources available to you are your CA and your academic adviser. These experts can help you reach your goals and make your time at UW Oshkosh great.

For your resume: When you use campus resources, such as your academic adviser, you can stay on track to graduate and can get help finding ways to stay involved on campus. Utilizing your resources can help you get the grades you want, which means a great GPA.

3) Get Involved
There are so many great student organizations on campus to choose from! Not only will you meet others who have similar interests, you will also develop leadership skills. Student organizations are also a great way to do what you love. Whether you enjoy sports or philosophy, there is an organization for you.

For your resume: Employers want to see a well-rounded candidate and campus involvement is a great way to do what you love while building your resume! It also shows employers that you are a leader in your community and that you have initiative.

4) Network
Build connections with everyone you meet. Your CAs, academic advisers, and even your professors.
In college you are also going to meet some people who you don’t get along with. A great motto to have in your journey through college is to be courteous to everyone you meet. Sure, you may not see eye-to-eye with that professor, but blowing up at that person isn’t going to help anything. One day when you are looking for a job, that person may know someone who is the hiring manager for the job you applied for. Pick your battles because you never know!

For your resume: Finding a job is often about who you know. The stronger your network, the better chance you are to find a job. After you make connections, be sure to keep in touch. Create a profile on the professional networking site, LinkedIn. This site is home to millions of professionals in the world and it’s a great way to meet others and stay connected with members of your network.

5) Do What You Love
Whether it’s volleyball or graphic design, do what you love and find ways to excel and show your talent. Blog about your experiences or strategies as a volleyball player or create an online portfolio for your art as a graphic design student. College is about academics, but at the same time you are learning more about yourself and finding who you are.

For your resume: In the end, it’s not about the resume, but really about who you are as a person. Employers want to see the real you. They want to see a real person who has hobbies and who is passionate about something, not a robot. Showing your skills and abilities communicates to an employer that you have hard work and dedication, which are great qualities for any candidate.
